Available in MIL

MIL is available as a set of DLLs under the Windows and Linux operating systems. The following computer requirements should be respected to ensure that MIL operates properly.

Under Windows

The following table lists the minimum and recommended requirements to use MIL 10.0, for each supported version of Microsoft Windows:

Microsoft Windows Version

Required memory to use MIL 10.0

MIL 32-bit

MIL 64-bit

Microsoft Windows 7/8

A minimum of 1024 Mbytes of RAM is required; the recommended minimum is 2048 Mbytes. 1

A minimum of 2048 Mbytes of RAM is required; the recommended minimum is 4096 Mbytes. 1

Microsoft Windows XP 2

A minimum of 1024 Mbytes of RAM is required; the recommended minimum is 2048 Mbytes. 1

Unavailable. 2

1 This does not include non-paged (DMA) memory reserved for MIL grab buffers.

2 Note that MIL does not support 64-bit Windows XP.

Note that Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact is supported, but only for Matrox smart cameras. See your Matrox smart camera manual for computer requirements.

Hardware requirements

The minimum required hard disk space to install the MIL development environment is 2560 Mbytes for 32-bit operating systems and 3072 Mbytes for 64-bit operating systems. A minimum of 1024 Mbytes of free hard disk space is required to install the MIL runtime environment. In addition, a computer with a CPU that supports the SSE2 instruction set is required.

Supported software

The MIL DVD includes MIL libraries that support the following development environments under Microsoft Windows XP/7/8:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ compiler (unmanaged) (2008, 2010 [with Service Pack 1], 2012, 2013 [update 4]).

  • Microsoft Visual C# compiler (2008, 2010 [with Service Pack 1], 2012, 2013 [update 4]).

  • Microsoft Visual Basic .NET compiler (2008, 2010 [with Service Pack 1], 2012, 2013 [update 4]).

  • Python development environment supporting Python 2.7 or 3.4.

Web browser requirement for MIL help

To run MIL help, you will need Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.0 and above.

Hibernate and standby/sleep modes

MIL does not support the hibernate and standby/sleep modes under Microsoft Windows. When the Microsoft Windows operating system enters any of these modes, the response of a running MIL application varies depending on the version of Microsoft Windows used:

  • Microsoft Windows XP. The MIL application prevents the operating system from entering the hibernate or standby mode.

  • Microsoft Windows 7/8. The MIL application detects when the operating system enters the hibernate or sleep mode. Once the operating system comes out of these modes, you will be prompted to restart the computer for proper functionality of the application.

Under Linux

To run MIL under Linux, there are minimum and recommended operating system and hardware requirements.

Supported Linux distributions

The following Linux distributions are supported for MIL 10.0:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux. 2 Gbytes of RAM is the recommended minimum amount of RAM.

  • Ubuntu LTS. 2 Gbytes of RAM is the recommended minimum amount of RAM.

See the millinux release notes for the supported versions of these Linux distributions.

Hardware requirements

A minimum of 700 Mbytes of free hard disk space is required to install the MIL development environment. A minimum of 200 Mbytes of free hard disk space is required to install the MIL runtime environment. In addition, a computer with a CPU that supports the SSE2 instruction set is required.

Web browser requirement for MIL help

To run MIL help, you will need Mozilla Firefox version 20.0 and above.
